This Monday, June 20th will be the longest day of the year, otherwise known as the Summer Solstice. The word solstice comes from the Latin solstitium: from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop). So on Monday, make time to stop, reflect on your year, acknowledge how far you’ve come and set your intentions for what you want to create or encourage in your life during the second half of the year, until the Winter Solstice.
Throughout history, many cultures have associated the summer solstice with a renewal of mind, body and spirit and a celebration of creative expression. It has been celebrated in many forms since the beginning of time.
So this year, my good friend Melissa and I will be holding a special yoga class to honor the sun and celebrate the beginning of summer. This 90 minute heart-opening flow will hopefully leave you feeling recharged and renewed- ready for some summer fun.
A yoga practice or ritual is an exciting and inspiring way to gather friends, celebrate the sun, honor our minds, and explore our bodies; but if you can’t make it to class, perhaps you can celebrate the summer solstice on your own. Your solstice celebration doesn’t have to be a yoga practice, it can be as simple as doing a little dance, walking along the beach, enjoying a special meal, or sitting around a bonfire… but whatever it is, allow your inner sun to shine!
